  • Car Rental Company vs. Car Sharing?

We operate on a community car-sharing model. Instead of one vehicle being reserved for a full day, our cars may serve multiple renters, whether for an hour, a few hours, or longer.

This flexible, shared-access system supports our local community and visiting ʻohana. Because of this model, our policies and pricing may differ from traditional rental agencies.

About us

Mahalo Car Share was founded by siblings who saw a real need for additional transportation options on the North Shore of O’ahu. Built for the community and sustained by your support, we’re here to stay providing stress-free, convenient car rentals for everyday errands and meaningful moments alike. Designed around a car-sharing model, our service helps make transportation more accessible to more people, whether for an hour, a few hours, or longer. Mahalo nui for letting us be part of your ride.

    • Be 21 years or older

    • (University students may rent starting at age 18 providing student ID)

    • Hold a valid driver’s license (U.S. or approved international)

    • Carry active personal auto insurance or purchase an approved rental coverage option for primary coverage

    • Use a valid debit or credit card in the renter’s name

Please note: Mahalo Car Share reserves the right to refuse service to any individual who does not meet eligibility, safety, or policy requirements.

If you have questions about eligibility, we’re happy to help, please reach out before booking.

  • All renters must have valid auto insurance or select an approved primary rental coverage option at checkout.

As outlined in the rental agreement, a renter’s personal auto insurance is considered primary coverage, and Mahalo Car Share’s coverage is secondary, when applicable.

Personal auto insurance may extend to rental vehicles, depending on the policy. Renters who do not have personal auto insurance, or who prefer not to use it, may select an approved rental coverage option that provides primary coverage. Not all third-party or short-term insurance plans qualify.

These coverage requirements help ensure safety, responsibility, and liability accountability for everyone using our service.
